New observer state status proves overwhelming international support for Palestinian self-determination

The American Muslims for Palestine (AMP), a national nonprofit organization dedicated to educating Americans about Palestine is heartened by Palestine’s new status as a ‘nonmember observer state’ to the United Nations.

The UN General Assembly at its meeting on Nov 29, passed the Palestinian Authority’s petition by a vote of 138-9 with 41 abstentions. This wide margin reflects the reality that the Palestinian’s pursuit of self-determination is vastly supported by the international community. It also shows that U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East and its support of Israeli occupation policies are becoming irrelevant in the world arena.

It is now clear that the United States’ and Israel’s position represent a minority of world opinion. The time is coming when the majority voice – added to the global Palestinian voice – will become the reality, in word, deed and, most importantly, in policy that will result in a free Palestine.

AMP reminds everyone that although the UN vote is an historic step, Palestinians remain under occupation. Israeli occupation policies have fragmented Palestinian society: the Palestinians in Gaza are under siege; Palestinians in the West Bank live without freedom of movement; Palestinian citizens of Israel do not have equal rights and millions of Palestinians continue to live as refugees, as internally displaced persons or in Diaspora.

We recognize this new status at the United Nations is largely symbolic and will not change these painful facts on the ground. However, in the long-run, it could have an impact if Palestinian leadership unify under a common cause and utilize the international infrastructure in a systematic way to bring about legal, political and grassroots pressure on Israel and its supporters to end the occupation.

“The UN vote is a result of decades-long struggle by Palestinians across the world and reaffirms the just cause for Palestine,” said Dr. Hatem Bazian, AMP chairman. “Achieving liberty and freedom for Palestine may be slow, but inevitably Palestine will be free.”

We cannot lose sight that the occupation must end and that refugees must be granted their internationally guaranteed right to return to their homeland.

AMP calls upon all people of conscience to redouble their efforts in support of the Palestinian call for boycott, divestment and sanctions, especially now when world opinion finally favors the just cry of Palestinians. We must follow up the UN vote with actions that not only will continue to educate the American public but will also turn this historic vote into political capital that will free Palestine from the yoke of Israeli occupation.
