Job Opening: Community Organizer

The American Muslims for Palestine, a national education and advocacy organization, is seeking a local organizer to take the lead on organizing chapter activities and to connect AMP-Chicago to local social justice advocacy and activism.

This is part-time, with the possibility of developing into a full-time position with the right candidate

Job Duties:
1. Work and coordinate with Chicago chapter to plan and implement AMP-Chicago events, including, but not limited to: the annual fundraising dinner; the Nakba event; film-screenings, lectures, conferences, rallies and other such events.

2. Distribute and collect donation boxes throughout the metro region monthly.

3. Work with the graphic designer and printer to assure the readiness of all needed materials, hang or distribute posters and flyers throughout metro region to announce events.

4. Recruit, maintain and coordinate volunteers for all major events.

5. Create and maintain visually appealing AMP booth for major events, such as the AMP or MAS-ICNA, ISNA conferences, and other local events.

6. Identify opportunities for AMP leafleting and/or tabling, with the goal of marketing AMP to wider audiences.

7. Act as liaison between AMP-Chicago and other Chicago-based social justice organizations and attend meetings to ensure AMP-Chicago involvement in local BDS and other Palestine advocacy campaigns.

8. Help organize and lead the AMP national Ramadan Date Boycott campaign, under the direction of other national staff.

9. Build relationships with other Islamic and Arab organizations in the Chicago metro region.

10. Assist the educational committee in implementing its state-wide campaigns

Qualifications:
Successful candidate will be a reliable, self-starter and enterprising individual, who can set and meet goals and deadlines.

A. Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, international studies or other related areas preferred.

B. Non-profit work or volunteer experience.

C. Previous experience with planning and/or coordinating large events.

D. Experience with public speaking and/or delivering Khutbahs a plus.

E. Ability to speak Arabic a plus.

F. Ability and availability to work a flexible schedule, and late evenings as well as weekends.

G. Has the physical ability to carry boxes, equipment, and other stuff.
