Honor the victims of Deir Yassin by continuing to work for Palestine

Statements

(CHICAGO 04/09/2013) – Today, 65 years after the Deir Yassin massacre, which symbolizes the beginning of the Nakba and the dispossession of the Palestinian people, two dozen Palestinian youth are reclaiming the village Zionist colonizers forced their families from in 1948.

Twenty-four Palestinian Christian youth are taking turns sleeping in a room connected to a church in the village of Ikrit in the Galilee District, according to the Electronic Intifada. The church and cemetery are the only things remaining after Jewish militants depopulated the village of about 900 residents, destroying their homes and other structures.

This action, ongoing hunger strikes by Palestinian political prisoners such as Samer Issawi, and the tent cities like Bab Al Shams are just some of the continuing acts of resistance to Israel’s decades-long occupation of the Palestinian people – resistance that has been made necessary because of the Deir Yassin massacre and the ongoing ethnic cleansing of the Palestinian people.

Sixty-five years ago, Jewish terrorists crept into the tiny village of Deir Yassin and brutally massacred its slumbering residents. Those who weren’t killed were rounded up and forced into exile, leaving behind everything but the clothes on their backs – and perhaps the key to their homes.

“The Nakba is not just one historical event, but an ongoing event” said Dr. Osama Abu Irshaid, AMP board member. “The Nakba is a process that developed the systematic dispossession of Palestinians; it’s the destruction of a civil society for the intended purposes of a colonial enterprise to be set in its place.”

We must never forget the victims of Deir Yassin. We must honor the deceased, those permanently in exile and all those who today continue to resist the occupation by striving to bring justice to the Palestinian people. AMP pledges to continue to raise awareness about the occupation, Israeli apartheid policies and how the United States allows Israeli to act with impunity through more than $3 billion per year in foreign military aid.
