46 years is long enough – Time to stop talking and to take action!
Today marks 46th year since Israel launched its Six Day War of aggression, occupying what was left of historic Palestine, the Golan Heights and the Sinai. During that fateful period from June 5 to 12 in 1967, Jerusalem came under attack and Al Aqsa was threatened with obliteration.
The summer of 1967 must have been a period of profound disappointment for the Palestinians who had hoped for their liberation, not more occupation. Sadly, conditions on the ground have deteriorated significantly in the past four decades. Today, Palestinians own less than 8 percent of their homeland. The occupation, restrictive travel permits, the Apartheid Wall and the siege on Gaza have forced Palestinians into isolated cantons, separated from each other in Gaza, the West Bank and within historic Palestine, and also from the millions of Palestinians in Diaspora.
As the United States continues to support the occupation with billions of taxpayer dollars and Secretary of State John Kerry offers false promises of peace talks to nowhere, life for Palestinians in becoming untenable. The United Nations has said that due to the siege and the results of Operation Cast Lead, Gaza will become uninhabitable by the year 2020. In April, 238 Palestinian children were incarcerated illegally, the same as in March, the highest number since 2010. As of May 1, Israeli Occupation Forces were incarcerating 4,979 Palestinian political prisoners, holding 156 of them without charge or trial. The United Nations reports that Occupation Forces are increasing their arrests of children in the Hebron area. This comes against the backdrop of increased settler violence across the West Bank.
The list of violations of international law, of apartheid policies and human rights abuses within the West Bank, Gaza and for Palestinian citizens of Israel goes on and on.
But this year, we must do more than wring our hands and shake our heads. It is time to take decisive action! The movement for Palestinian liberty in the United States is growing by leaps and bounds. Diverse groups are coming together on the issue of international law and human rights. Join us, and do your part to help end US unconditional support for Israel.
